Praying The Names of God

In ancient biblical times, names carried powerful meanings.  They weren’t just used to identify one person from another. A name would also reflect a person’s character, nature, and destiny.

Abraham is one example, . His name meant a “father of many nations” and the name of his wife, Sarah meant “princess-the mother of many nations”. And that is exactly what they were!

When you know the true character of God, it will enable you to trust Him more. By renewing your mind through prayer and studying the names of God and their meaning, the truth will dissolve all doubt and breathe life into your soul!

” The people who know their God will be strong and take action” Daniel 11:32.

“And those who know Your name will put their trust in You,

For You, Lord, have not abandoned those who seek You”. Psalm 9:10.

 

A name is simply a word that tells you who a person is. God has many names and they each reveal a different aspect of His character, His ways, who He is, and what He does. To know His name is to know Him. When you really know God and understand the meaning behind the names of God, it will fill your heart with faith and confidence. In the Bible, God has shown us a lot of His names by simply telling us what they are outright–names like I am the Lord” or “I am God Almighty.” if you study as many of the names of God as you can, you will see who He is. And, the more of His names you study, the better you will know Him.

After you find God’s various names in the Bible, you can put them to use by praying those names back to Him—and by using them The Bible includes more than 85 names of God. Each one gives us a description of who God is in your worship. Here are a few names of God and  Here’s how to pray the names of God:

When praying the names of God

  • Understand the name;
  • Apply the name in faith to see who God is in your situation;
  • Thank the Lord for BEING who and what that name describes in your life;
  • Thank the Lord for DOING whatever the name describes in your life (according to the attribute of His nature that any specific name reveals)
  • Ask Him to manifest Himself in that way even more in your life.
  • Elohim; Elohim means God The Creator (Genesis 1:1). When you pray to God The Creator, you are remembering that God is the powerful creator who can create order out of your chaos. He can create a beautiful masterpiece out of your life.
  • Yahweh; Yahweh is the Hebrew name for God meaning I Am, The Self-Existent One. I Am. He was. He is. He always has been and always will be. He is the Self-Existent One with no beginning and no end. When you pray the name of God Yahweh, you are praying to the One true God that has always existed and will have no end
  • El Shaddai; El Shaddai is the Hebrew name for God meaning The All-Sufficient One, God Almighty. When you pray to El Shaddai, you are praying to God Almighty, the all-sufficient One. He has everything that you need to sustain you.
  • Abba; Abba, means ‘Father’. When you pray to Abba, you are praying to God as your Father, you are praying to the One who sees you as His precious child and counts every hair on your head!
  • Jehovah Jireh; Jehovah Jireh means Provider. Pray: Dear Jehovah Jireh, You are my provider. I look to You for my support. Thank You for always providing just what I need at the right time.
  • Jehovah Rapha; Jehovah Rapha mean Healer. Pray: Dear Lord, I call out to You as the healer. Please bring healing to __________ today. I trust in Your name and Your power.
  • Jehovah Nissi; Jehovah Nissi means Banner. Pray: Dear Lord, I lift You up today over my home, my workpace, my relationships and my life. I want You to be my banner. I am on Your side – Your team. I align myself with You.
  • : My Rock; Pray: Father God, thank You for being My Rock. Thank You for being solid and stable and sure.
  • My Shield; Shield means Protector. Pray: Father God, You are my Shield. Thank You, Abba Father, for shielding me from the storms. I ask You to help me now. Keep me safe. Help me to abide in You

 

The names of God reveal His character and nature. When we pray His different names, we meditate on Who He is and see Him in a more personal way. It deepens our relationship with Him and enhances our prayer life.
